Learn about the Red, White, and Blue of Skin!

Red: Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness in the face, most commonly affecting middle-aged women with fair skin. While it is incurable and often controlled by environmental factors, there are a few ways to treat the condition! Medications and oral antibiotics are good options if you see a physician for your rosacea. Topical treatments, like my Triple Shot Serum are also amazing! Triple Shot contains green tea, antioxidants, and resveratrol. These ingredients are extremely soothing, helping with both prevention and treatment of rosacea flare ups.

White: Dry Skin

70% of women have dry or combination skin! Dry skin is a very common skin condition that can easily be treated by a hyaluronic acid treatment. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that naturally occurs within the skin to retain moisture and maintain collagen synthesis. When applied topically, hyaluronic acid molecules promote moisture penetration and retention by restoring water content to dry skin! Hyaluronic acid holds 1000x its weight in water and is water-based, allowing for intense hydration without making your skin oily! My Hyaluronic Line Filler is an amazing hyaluronic acid serum, fractionated into three different molecular weights to ensure successful penetration into the skin.

Blue: Under Eye Hollows

Under eye hollows are so common, especially as we persist through allergy season. The blue veins underlying your under eye skin can age you and make you appear tired and unrested! A daily allergy pill can help with these blue veins, but the best treatment for this hollowed appearance is under eye filler! Under eye filler can restore volume underneath the eyes to combat the hollowing effect that accompanies age and many nights of insufficient sleep. You will instantly look brighter and more rested!

Brown Spots: Causes and Treatments

Many people suffer from brown spots or some sort of hyper pigmentation, but very few people know that there are different types of brown spots. Keep reading to find out what causes yours!

Causes

Age Spots/ Sun Spots: These types of brown spots are caused by prolonged sun exposure. Be sure to wear a sunscreen with at least SPF 50 to help minimize this! My Perfecting Sunshield is amazing. It has Vitamin C, green tea, and antioxidants to help prevent brown spots and prevent free radical damage from the sun!

Acne Spots: Acne can cause hyper pigmentation because acne is an injury to the skin. This is why it is very important not to pop or pick at your pimples as this may result in darker scarring. Use a good Retin-A serum, like my Diamond Line Refine. My serum will not only promote collagen turnover to help with this scarring, but it will also mature your oil glands to help prevent new acne.

Hormonal- Melasma & Chloasma: Many women who have recently started birth control or are pregnant can experience an increase in dark spots. Melanocytes are triggered during hormonal changes and are extra-sensitive to UV damage. This is another reason to be religious with your sunscreen!

Treatments

Microneedling: If you are looking for a deeper treatment, then consider microneedling! Microneedling causes micro-injuries to the surface of the skin, which triggers your body’s healing response and produces collagen. Come by our office to for a microneedling treatment complemented by growth factors that boost skin cell growth and my Pure Hydration that topically fills in lines and penetrates deep into your skin to provide intense hydration.

Exfoliation: To regularly treat dark spots, make sure you are exfoliating your skin! An exfoliant with glycolic acid is crucial for lightening dark spots and brightening skin because glycolic acid renews skin by triggering skin cell turnover. My Glycolic Acid Cleanser not only has glycolic acid, but it also has Vitamins A,C, and E, as well as Green Tea extracts to prevent irritation.

Acne Free Skin All Summer!

Hydration: Lots of acne products can be drying, so this month we are focusing on bringing moisture and hydration back to the skin. An easy first step is drinking more water. Drinking water can not only prevent dry skin and flaking, but it also improves skin elasticity and flushes out skin toxins. The next step is using a good moisturizer that gives you moisture without making you oily. While you do want to re-hydrate your skin, you don’t want to become too oily and break out again.

Glycolic Acid: To prevent future breakouts use a cleanser with glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is one of the smallest molecules in the alpha hydroxy acids family, which means it can penetrate the skin better than other molecules. It works topically by breaking down sebum on the surface of the skin and works on a deeper layer by triggering the skin’s renewal process to bring you brighter, tighter skin. Glycolic acid also unclogs pores and prevents blackheads. Using a glycolic acid cleanser regularly is crucial to maintaining clear skin.

The Science of Necking

MY NAME IS DR. KAY AND I’M A PHYSICIAN AND FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON BASED IN LA. I LOVE HELPING PEOPLE LOOK AND FEEL THEIR BEST! CHECK OUT MY INSTAGRAM @BEAUTYBYDRKAY TO SEE SOME OF MY WORK.

The long, slender neck is a symbol of youth, beauty, and elegance. When the aging process hits the neck and lower face, it creeps silently upon us, until suddenly, one day, we notice significant neck sagging, jowling and textural skin changes. Luckly, we have new advances in the treatment of the aging of the neck that can add a nice, step-wise approach to neck rejuvenation for patients of all ages. Get your neck looking beautiful this year.

Beginning in heir thirties, patients experience the slow breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers of the skin that is responsible for the gradual sagging and loss of tone in the neck. This leads to the gravitational fall of important suspensory ligaments that hold fat in its proper location. With collagen breakdown and gravity working against youth, it is just a matter of time before the first changes of jowling and flabbiness begin to appear in the lower face and neck.

When textural neck changes orrcur, it is bet to begin an anti-aging regimen that encourages the stimulation of collagen production with a non-irritating retin-A based product. These vitamin A dertivatives – including gentle retinol, stronger retinoic acid, and Retin-A itself, are the only proven cosmeceutical ingredients that have been studied and proven to stimulate collagen production and thus prevent and reverse fine lines, proven to stimulate collagen production and thus prevent and reverse fine lines, wrinkles, and textural changes of the skin. The potency of Retin-A, however, also makes it quite irritating to the sun-sensitive neck. Make sure to include SPF in your skin care regimen to protect your skin from sun damage. This is essential to protect from the harsh UV light that beats down on the neck and decollete, causing poikiloderma, sun damage, and a leathery appearance.

Platysmal bands, which cause tenting of the neck skin, and neck folds can be treated with botox. This can help with wrinkled skin, and to prevent future wrinkles. Fillers such as Restylane can be injected into deeper lines to smoothen the texture and appearance of the skin.

Submandibular fat, commonly known as the “double chin” can be treated non-surgically with KYBELLA®, an injectable treatment containing Deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA®destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal. Most patients receive 3-4 treatments – and then don’t have to worry about that fat coming back!

Benefits of Green Tea:
Green tea is beneficial for not only your skin, but your body as well!

Improves brain function!

Green tea contains caffeine, which is a known stimulant, but green tea also contains the amino acid L-theanine. L-theanine can cross the blood brain barrier allowing it to increase the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which is known to have anti-anxiety properties. Caffeine working in conjunction with L-theanine causes a synergistic effect and vastly improves brain function. If you find your brain wandering off during the day or yawning during an important meeting, try incorporating green tea into your daily diet.

Helps with weight loss!

Plenty of weight loss supplements claim to contain green tea and there is a good reason for this! Green tea extract can promote weight loss by boosting your metabolism by 3-4%. Catechins (antioxidants) and caffeine work together to increase levels of the hormone norepinephrine, which the nervous system uses to signal fat cells to break down. Studies have shown that consuming green tea before and after working out can help you increase fat oxidation by 17%. If losing weight is on your agenda try drinking green tea!

Prevents diseases!

Green tea can help prevents diseases like Type II diabetes and heart disease by:

  • moderating blood pressure
  • normalizing blood sugar levels
  • minimizing inflammation
  • increases cardiac output (volume of blood pumped by heart every minute)

If you suffer from or are at risk of contracting these disease consider drinking more green tea!

Skin Benefits of Green Tea

Lots of Dr. Kay’s products contain green tea polyphenols, which contain antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help the skin fight against free radicals, soothe irritated skin, and smooth skin. All of Dr.Kay’s products are cruelty free, paraben free, and contain botanicals.

Dr. Kay’s Day Dream is a great product that combines all of the benefits of green tea, such as reducing puffiness, improving skin elasticity, and shrinking pore size, with palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, a more gentle wrinkle reducer. Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 is a great amino acid that helps produce collagen. It is quite similar to Retinol, but is not nearly as harsh on the skin and in conjunction with the soothing properties of green tea helps give your skin the ultimate moisture and anti-aging properties without the irritation!

Are you getting enough greens?

Are you eating enough fruits and vegetables? Half of your plate should be either fruits and vegetables to get the most nutrients out of each meal. The remaining half should be broken up into two quarters: meat/ proteins and whole grains. Eating fruits and vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and grapefruit can help prevent cardiovascular disease and certain kinds of cancers. Fiber found in both food groups is good for your digestive health. Potatoes do not qualify as a vegetable so consider switching out your french fries for cauliflower! Another great way to create a healthier meal is switching out your white rice for brown rice. White rice is a processed carbohydrate that lacks nutritional value, while brown rice is a whole grain that is chockfull of nutrients.

If you struggle with eating enough vegetables try the Green Warrior Protein smoothie! This is one delicious way to get your necessary fiber and daily nutrition. The recipe was found at ohsheglows.com.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh red grapefruit juice
  • 1 cup (25 g) destemmed dinosaur/lacinato kale or baby spinach
  • 1 large sweet apple (200 g), cored and roughly chopped
  • 1 cup (130 g) chopped cucumber
  • 1 medium/large stalk celery (85 g), chopped (about 3/4 cup)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons (30 to 40 g) hemp hearts, to taste
  • 1/3 cup (55 g) frozen mango
  • 2 tablespoons (4 g) packed fresh mint leaves
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons virgin coconut oil (optional)
  • 4 ice cubes, or as needed

Feeling lucky?

All cultures have their own good luck charms. Luck can present itself in unique ways. Here are just a few ways to increase your luck!

  • Positive Thinking: The reason positive thinking can improve your luckiness is because having a positive mindset will propel you forward and allow you to continue on endeavors even if success isn’t guaranteed.
  • Karma: The saying “what comes around, goes around” applies to your luck because spreading goodwill will inherently cause others to do the same and this good cheer may eventually wrap around and come back to you!
  • Feng Shui: Maintaing Feng Shui, or the harmony of an individual and their environment, is so important to your luck because if you can’t find that winning lottery ticket in the clutter of your room then the winning ticket is useless! Those who practice a clean environment also tend to have less cluttered minds.
  • Be Curious: Although being curious may not seem like a way to improve your luck, it is a way to increase your possibility of opportunities. More opportunities means more options for you!

3 Reasons Why We Should Destroy The Stigma Around Plastic Surgery

MY NAME IS DR. KAY AND I’M A PHYSICIAN AND FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON BASED IN LA. I LOVE HELPING PEOPLE LOOK AND FEEL THEIR BEST! CHECK OUT MY INSTAGRAM @BEAUTYBYDRKAY TO SEE SOME OF MY WORK.

For years there has been a stigma around cosmetic surgery. Countless jokes about botox “freezing” your face and making you expressionless. Comments about fillers giving women “duck lips” and making them look fake. This has been a challenge I’ve faced my whole career – judgement from other medical students when I told them about my career plans, or that snobby look that people give me when I tell them what I do for a living. Enough is enough! Let’s destroy the stigma around cosmetic services. Here are a few reasons why you should do that…

1. Your favorite celebrities get work done

Cameron Diaz photographed by Tony Shek

When I was younger, I used to watch TV and wonder, “How do all these stars look SO beautiful all the time?” It wasn’t until I became a professional that I realized most actresses get work done! Some try to hide it, but others, like Cameron Diaz, are more honest. In her book, The Longevity Book, Diaz explains, “They’re to help people feel a little bit better about themselves”. This is the attitude that all celebrities should have, instead of trying to hide the fact that they need a little help with their appearance. Aging is natural, but what isn’t natural is pretending that you’ve maintained the same beauty for years with no interjections.

2. Advances in cosmetic surgery have made for much more natural results

The results coming from botox and fillers have changed so much in the past 10-15 years. Patients leave their doctors’ offices looking smoother and refreshed, but still like themselves. This is especially true if you see an experienced injector. Most of the comments that I receive from my patients are ones to the effect of “I look like myself, but better”. Cosmetic surgery in 2018 is all about small changes that lead you to feeling better and more confident!

3. Aging is natural, maintenance is necessary!

You wouldn’t keep the same house or car for 40 years without doing any updates on it! Your face is like a car – things will slowly break down, paint will peel, and you’ll have to update some parts! In your face, we lose collagen as we age, and fat pads start to droop. We get wrinkles from continuous smiling or eyebrow movements. Filler can help lift the face back to the way it used to be! Botox can help calm the muscles that cause wrinkles, so help smooth them away. There’s no shame in wanting to maintain your same beauty as you age! And starting early can help prevent future problems – getting baby botox at 25 or 30 is simply preventing future wrinkles, instead of trying to treat them after you get them.

These are just a few of the reasons why YOU shouldn’t be ashamed to go see a facial plastic surgeon, like me. Invest in yourself and your beauty, and if your friends judge you, you know that they’re just stuck in the past. One day (hopefully soon!) they will realize that there’s no shame in wanting to be a confident and beautiful version of yourself.

7 Tips on How Smart Girls Study

MY NAME IS DR. KAY AND I’M A PHYSICIAN AND FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON BASED IN LA. I LOVE HELPING PEOPLE LOOK AND FEEL THEIR BEST! CHECK OUT MY INSTAGRAM @BEAUTYBYDRKAY TO SEE SOME OF MY WORK.

Being a student can be hard. Being a woman in medicine can be even harder. But it’s so important to know that you can do it! With enough determination, and maybe just a few tips and tricks, anything is possible. I’ve compiled a list of my favorite study secrets from real students and real doctors. Learn how to study effectively from myself, the physicians who came before me, and from the new generation of pre-medical students!

1. Map out your time.
It’s so important to know your schedule inside and out so that you can plan how you spend your time. When you get your syllabus at the beginning of the term, block out important due dates and exams so you know exactly what you’re working towards! From there, plan out how you’ll spend each week so that there are no surprises by exam season.

2. Don’t cram.
I know everyone does it, and everyone says not to do it, but it’s really so important to study your material a little bit at a time. I always found it helpful to go over a lecture the same day I heard it. I would go through all my notes to make sure I understood why the professor said everything he or she said, and why it was important for overall course understanding. This also helps to filter out unnecessary or irrelevant information from the beginning!

3. Make a study guide.
After refining my lecture notes, I always found it helpful to make a study guide including everything I had learned about a week before an exam. This was really great for making sure I understood how all the material fit together. It also helped as another filtering step to make sure all the information I was studying was actually meaningful.

4. Make mnemonics and make conversation.
When study guides get to be 50+ pages and you feel like you’re drowning in material, make mnemonics! They’re fun ways to remember groups of information. Also try talking through information with a study buddy. It’s often much easier to remember a conversation than to remember a page in a textbook or study guide.

5. Study to learn.
Repeated exposure is key. Reading, drawing, summarizing, and writing things down is important! Learning medicine is like learning a new language, but if you change how your brain organizes material, it’ll help you get everything down. One thing that really helped me learn was reading a chapter, then closing the book and summarizing everything I learned on a blank piece of paper.

6. Learn how to take breaks effectively.
I made a habit out of silencing my phone and putting it away for half hour blocks. I would study really hard, with no distractions, for that half hour, and then check my phone for five minutes before going back to my work. This helped keep me accountable and prevented me from scrolling through social media instead of studying for my final.

7. Environment is important.
I realized after spending eight hours in the library every day studying for the MCAT, that the library actually made me miserable. I started seeking out hip new coffee shops with cool vibes, good drinks, and good wifi. I found that studying in an environment that made me happy made my studying more effective.

I hope these study secrets help you chase your dreams! Thank you so much for reading.
